How Ferrari’s Artistic Director Took Inspiration From A Road Trip To Create Their SpringSummer 2023 Collection

There is no better way to spark such epiphanies than through travel, as some of our most potent creative breakthroughs occur when our mind is focused elsewhere, like those moments of insight we experience when our thoughts are freed and left to wander. The director of Ferrari’s creative department, Rocco Iannone, had this very thing happen to him on a road trip through L.A. His return to the sunny city inspired his spring/summer 2023 collection for the illustrious brand, as did the cultural iconography of Ferrari. “I wanted to explore the myth of Ferrari through themes that have always fascinated me—travel, cinema, and dreams—as transformed into notions of determination, passion, and achievement,” Iannone said.

When life slows down for a moment and we can let our creative juices flow, we often come up with ingenious new ideas. Inspired by the tales of exploration and discovery associated with Ferraris, Iannone drove around southern California that summer of 2022. Through his personal Instagram, he recorded his travels and captured moments of insight along the way. Traveling from the modernist masterpieces of Silver Lake to the industrial downtown and then out into the surreal panoramas of Joshua Tree, the unexpected had an equal impact on him. This included the light, the landscape, and the way of life.

A significant part of Iannone’s vision, however, remains firmly connected to the values established by the brand’s founder, Enzo Ferrari, more than seventy-five years ago. His dreams of immortality and automotive prowess live on in the Ferrari brand in all its guises, from cars to clothing. The realisation of Enzo Ferrari’s visions takes on a new form with the release of this set.

He has condensed the allure of Los Angeles into a Ferrari lineup, complete with photographs styled by Vogue contributor Jacob K that recreate the California light, drawing on both his own memories of the area and the region as a whole and the ideas that are central to the Ferrari lifestyle and the story that its celebrated vehicles tell. Iannone’s moodboard is peppered with archival photos of 20th century icons like Mick Jagger and a 288 GTO, Kate Bush and a 308 GTS, and Nastassja Kinski and a 250 GT, their independent spirits perfectly reflected in the cars they were photographed with.

Still, Iannone's vision has deep roots in the principles that the brand's namesake, Enzo Ferrari, established more than seventy-five years ago. His dreams of leaving a lasting legacy and automotive prowess inform the evolution of the Ferrari brand across all mediums, including the world of high fashion. To see Enzo Ferrari's visions realised in this collection is to see them realised in a brand new way.

He has condensed the allure of Los Angeles into a Ferrari lineup, with photos styled by Vogue contributor Jacob K that recreate the California light, bringing together his own memories of the area with ideas about the Ferrari lifestyle and the story behind Ferrari’s most lauded automobiles. Some of the most famous people of the 20th century—Mick Jagger with a 288 GTO, Kate Bush leaning on her 308 GTS, and Nastassja Kinski by a 250 GT—appear in archival photos on Iannone’s moodboard, their free-spirited personalities reflected perfectly in the cars they’re pictured with.

Ferrari’s signature “Rosso Corsa” red and “Giallo Modena” yellow provide jolts of colour against earthy neutrals and olive; sky blue and zingy lemon invoke gentle Los Angeles sunsets. Fabric and clothing that pushes the limits of what can be worn in what kinds of settings is a common theme, as is the creative manipulation of fabric. The handcrafted detail is a direct homage to the long-standing efforts that have made Ferrari a byword for superior craftsmanship. Bringing his enthusiasm into the physical world is what drives Iannone. Incorporating craftsmanship and an ongoing dialogue with all the makers who give shape to our ideas, I hope to infuse my work with a sense of dedication and care.
